Proxy List - What is Facebook and why is it important to Proxy Users?

Social networking is what Facebook is all about. Its been around since 2004 and boasts half a billion users. It connects friends and connects organisations such as schools and colleges. It allows those joined to the friends and organisations to know what is happening with them as they update their pages or groups.

The use of proxies comes into this equation as counties such as Iran, Pakistan often block for political reasons and schools and organisations often block for policy privacy and perceived time wasting issues.

Facebook is the largest of the social networking sites.

Proxy List - What is Youtube and why is it important to Proxy Users?

Youtube is all about sharing videos online. Its been around since 2005 and is currently owned by Google.

The video can be music related, tv, news, movie or created by amateurs. If you are registered, you can upload (so content can be monitored more easily) but if you just want to watch or listen, registration is not required.

Its attactions for proxy users is the easy access to the latest and best in the media - for free. The reason it is so widely blocked is it hosts politically related media (e.g. of China riots). Counties who often block include China, Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Thailand, Libya and Morocco. Schools and business especially the US, also block over bandwidth, policy and other matters.

Proxy List - What is TOR and how does it work?

TOR (or The Onion Routing project) has been around the proxy world for awhile now. Basically it encryts traffic like standard proxies but via server layers of encryption - hence the onion concept. Traffic is sent from router to router to ensure secrecy.

Its free to use - a software is downloaded to the users desktop and the connections are generated from there.

Note the US government has no trouble monitoring due to various legal requirments. The main downside however is TOR is well known to be slow.

Proxy List - What is an SSL Certificate and how is it used with Proxy?

An SSL certificate (or Secure Socket Layer) encryts traffic over the internet. Its designed to stop third parties accessing what users are doing on the internet. I.e. it provides a high level of confidentiality to the proxy users (used for many other non proxy sites for e.g. paying by credit card).

The certificates are bought from the same source as the domain. They need to be installed onto the server.

Are they worthwhile? They are not cheap - starting at about $25 each (per site) they make a proxy owners break even quite high. Personal experience suggests a) they are difficult to install for a beginner and b) no more traffic is generated for a site with an SSL certificate than those without. Summary, at least for a beginner, dont bother.

Proxy List - Problems with Users Accessing Myspace via Proxy

This happens everyonce and awhile. Why> Because MySpace sees alot of traffic coming to it from a small number of ips and blocks it probably under the impression it is spam (or wasting bandwidth). If you are with a provider that specialises in proxy lists and proxies (such as fdcservers.net). This can happen a few times a year.

The solution - either wait it out or place a call with the supplier. Without a fix you will be offering less than optimal service to you users.

- Slow Times for Proxy and Free Proxy List

There are basically two significant slow periods (in the USA) for free proxy list and proxy beyond the short term effects of say Xmas, Easter and national holidays (such as Memorial Day, Independence Day and Thanks Giving).

The first is Spring Break which is (theoretically) a study leave time starting from March to April (schools are different). The effect is spread over that period and of recent years has not had the strongly negative effects on proxy list earnings it has had in the past (still down 15-20%.

The most significant proxy earnings effect is over the Summer Holidays - dependent on the school this can run all the way from May until August. Proxy list earnings can be down to 20% in that period. Very painful, but that can be mitigated by building up non USA school traffic (people using at work or home) and non USA traffic (UK, Australia etc).

- Server Setup

Setting up a servers for proxy sites is not the same as for standard sites. Your server (assuming Apache) must be set up to reduce bottlenecks inherent with running proxy scripts.

Settings such as MaxClients, keepalive timeout, connect timeout, requests per child, and max keepalive requests all have a significant effect optimizing for proxies. For example keepalive timeout is often set at 1. This keeps client slots clear and ready for other users. On non busy non proxy sites this is often say 15 seconds. Having that high would severely effect your sites speed. You will have to experiment but adjusting these settings will save you cpu, ram etc and make your sites run faster. Proxy List - Information on Google Adsense

AdSense is an advertising campaign offered by Google in which ads are served on websites based on content. Website owners can enroll for this program by visiting the Google AdSense webpage and registering. Text, image and video ads can be placed on websites by Google based on the content of the website and the type of AdSense subscribed for. Revenue is generated on a �per click� or �per impression� basis.

When a visitor visits a website, an impression is made and the website owner will be paid if ads are clicked. Many website owners who do not have funds to sponsor a paid advertising campaign use Google AdSense to monetize their websites. AdSense income is deemed to be minimal at best as payments per click are very small, usually a few cents. The amount per click depends on the set of keywords used for the ads that are clicked on. Website owners have employed different ways to improve their AdSense revenue.

A number of traffic-generating techniques can be employed to improve the numbers of visitors to a website which usually translates to more clicks. Valuable content provided on a website can attract the highest paying AdSense ads in that category which pay more per click. Some website owners also use text on their websites that encourage visitors to click on ads although Google prohibits direct usage of text such as �click on my AdSense ads.� The source of all AdSense income comes from the AdWords advertising campaign program. AdWords employs the �pay per click� mode of advertising in which users offer a particular amount for specific keywords. The keywords appear in sponsored links and ads that Google places on different websites that have enrolled for the AdSense program. Ads are distributed to websites according to their category. When such AdSense ads are clicked on in a websites, Google shares the amount paid by the client with the owner of the website. The rate at which revenue is shared is determined by the popularity of an ad and the amount offered by the client for such an ad which is determined only by Google.

There are different types of AdSense. The main types of AdSense include; AdSense for feeds, AdSense for search, AdSense for mobile content, AdSense for domains and AdSense for videos. AdSense for feeds is produced by inserting images into a text feed. Google writes the ad content into the image that is displayed by an RSS reader or web browser. AdSense for feed was introduced in 2005 and became available to all AdSense users in August of that year. Google search boxes are placed in websites by Google when the AdSense for search is subscribed for by a website owner. Mobile websites can also generate revenue using the AdSense for mobile content in which Google matches ads with the content of the mobile website.

AdSense for domains enable Google to place ads on domains that have not been developed. Domain name owners can subscribe to this form of AdSense and generate revenue for domains that are yet to be developed. Google mainly uses the YouTube network to generate video ads in the AdSense for video campaign. Publishers with video content can take advantage of AdSense for video to generate revenue for their websites. There are different rules and regulations governing the use of AdSense on websites. Click fraud is the most daunting challenge that Google faces with its AdSense program. Many website owners use different ways to click on their own AdSense ads.

The use of robots and all forms of AdSense cheats by website owners greatly reduces the value of the AdSense program. Some website owners have also accused Google of click fraud in which they claim that the amounts of clicks are deliberately reduced by Google. To prevent this, a number of click-tracking programs which are available online can be used to track the number of visitors to a particular website. Furthermore, AdSense is not to be displayed alongside explicit material and violators are banned from using AdSense altogether. Using the AdSense program, Google effectively acts as a go between in bringing advertisers and their products to a great number of websites which provide a potential customer with useful information and a link to buy related products or subscribe to a service. AdSense was first launched by Google in 2003 and the campaign has expanded well since then. Adsense id recommended to use on the proxy sites front page (not the proxified page).

- Servers for Proxies - Some Basic Information

A server generally refers to a combination of software and hardware units in a computer that provides different services to users. Servers are typically run on computers using an operating system but any software or hardware that is able to provide services can also be referred to as a server. Any computerized process that can share software between different client processes can be termed a server. Files can be shared with different clients using an operating system which operates as a server.

Web server applications including the HTTP server from Apache can usually be run on a computer that is capable. Computers are not typically regarded as servers but in running web server applications, they can be labeled as one. From the hardware point of view, a server describes computers that are used to run software applications in a network environment. Different computers share information in a networking environment with one acting as host to the others. A dedicated server is basically a computer that contains different features such as a fast CPU, a good RAM and one or more large hard drives that enhance performance in a network production environment.

The internet is a vast host of different servers and client applications. Many simple and complex severs are involved in the process of requesting a webpage from the internet. Different types of modems, routers and domain name servers combined with other necessary servers are involved in providing the World Wide Web on computers. There are different operating systems which include; Linux and Microsoft windows that are designed with client-server protocol in mind. Such operating systems are able to run background programs known as services such as the Apache HTTP server software which may be required to remain in a sleep mode till when it is necessary for them to become operational.

The entire structure of the internet is mainly based on a client-server application. Any action taken by an internet user requires different servers to interact with each other in providing a service. Traffic on the internet is directed by root name servers, DNS servers and routers which constitute a little portion on the millions of servers which are connected to the internet running all over the world. There are also some modern technology that operate on an inter-server level while other services on the internet such as some modes of file sharing and new implementation of telephony (Skype for example) do not employ the use of dedicated servers. Some services provided by internet servers include; the World Wide Web, domain name system, email, chat and instant messaging, database servers, streaming audio and video applications and FTP file transfer amongst others.

UNIX is one of the first versions of a server operating unit. It was originally designed as an operating system for minicomputers and became the preferred choice as servers gradually replaced minicomputers. Other popular operating systems for servers such as Solaris and Linux were designed with technology similar to or derived from UNIX. All heavily used for proxy. Server operating units have unique technological features that make adequately suited to the source of a main server. Adaptable features of server operating units include; the ability to completely update hardware units and software programs without necessarily being restarted, high level backup capabilities that permit frequent backup of online data, high level networking capabilities, high level security system and memory protection, automation abilities such as windows� services and GUI which is optional and not readily available. Server operating units have the ability to detect critical conditions such as processor or disk failure and overheating. Server operating units act as the providers of different services over the internet which involves different servers.

- GOOGLE ADWORDS

Although proxy sites do not usually us this product to gain traffic, I hope the following is useful. AdWords is Google�s main advertising product and main source of revenue. Google has developed a system that enables online network advertisers and marketers alike market products on its search engine and affiliate sites using specific text ads that link to a product website. When online users search for phrases that are related to a particular product or service, different product websites that have subscribed for AdWords using these keyword phrases appear on the search page as �sponsored links.� For instance, when using the Google search engine to search for a particular brand of wrist watch by typing the name of the wrist watch in the search box provided, different websites pop-up and depending on your search criteria, there may be lots of pages available relating to your search.

Looking at the top and right hand side of the Google search results page, you will find answers for your search with specific search links under a main link tagged �sponsored links.� These sponsored links are products of specific keywords that have been paid for by marketers relating to their product. The ads will appear in a format that includes a title, two short lines that describe the product or service and a URL link to the website providing the product or service. Depending on the amount you bid for your keyword, your ads will appear on higher pages or higher up the sponsored links category. Usually the higher your bid for a particular set of keywords, the higher up your ad goes. The AdWords advertising campaign is basically a �pay per click� system in which you offer to pay a specific amount for your ad and only pay when someone clicks on it.

Bidding higher for a particular set of keywords which link to your product website usually results in more visitors to your website as most web users do not scan past page one of a search page and click on the highest sponsored link on that page. AdWords usually help in filtering out web surfers who are just looking for information from real customers who are looking to buy a product or pay for a service. Many serious customers will click on a sponsored link in a search result page and go directly to where they can find a product or service they can pay for. So in essence, you do not need to have thousands of visitors to your website daily to make money through an AdWords campaign. It is usually better to bid for a targeted keyword or sets of keywords in a sponsored link than to wait for millions of visitors to your website who are just browsing for fun or surfing. Customers that go for a sponsored link usually do so because they need a product or service and they are willing to pay for it.

Advertising using �pay per click� is not as easy as just bidding the highest for a particular set of keywords. There are many factors that Google takes into consideration when placing preferences for a particular set of keywords. AdWords management is very important as you need to effectively research specific sets of keywords that will be relevant to your product or service, ensuring that such keywords are mostly searched for in their category. It is easy to set up an AdWords account and subsequently start an AdWords advertising campaign but your resources may be wasted if proper AdWords management is not carried out as most web users will just click on your link and move away if your website is not relevant or does not provide a good product or service at a rate which is deemed affordable in its category. Google gives preferences to the more effective ads which are frequently clicked on. So the highest bidder does not necessarily get the best exposure if his ads are not very effective in getting sufficient clicks.

Google offers different customization tools that help to optimize your AdWords campaign. You can choose different countries to which you want your ads to be shown and the language you want your ads to be displayed in. Google offers a list of about 250 countries and over 14 languages to choose from. Google also uses software that calculates the lowest amount you need to offer for your keywords to stay ahead of your competitors. You need to properly understand how the Google AdWords campaign works and the different methods you can employ in ensuring that you use this advertising campaign effectively to get good leads and paying customers. Google is in business to make money and they reward the most relevant ads that use targeted keywords with the most exposure.

Proxy List - Exactly What Is a proxy?

Oddly enough have never covered off on this one - there are two types, hardware (a server) or software (an application). The later is what we are talking about here. Basically the application serves as a middleman between the use and the web site the user wishes to access. The users connects to the application and the application connects to the site/webpage the user wishes to access. And the purpose of this? Security, i.e. to keep the user anonymous and to get around software that denies access to those given websites. Who uses? Those at schools/colleges, at work, at home. Who tries to block the sites? Countries, schools, employers, parents. There are several types of proxies, but the type we are promoting here are web proxies.

- Maximizing Earnings - Home Page Templates
Its important to try multiple home page set ups with your ads - placing and ad type can make a big difference to your earning with say adsense. Perhaps one 300X250 works best at the top of the page, or is it 1 X 728X90, or 2 X 300X250? You dont know until you test. This is often called A/B split testing. Note if you were buying traffic, using e.g. Googles conversion optimizer is the other side of the coin. Save your original template then run with the new for a few days - then compare. Then try another. There is a lot of information on the web about "hot spots" and ideal setups. Read but only testing and comparing will gain you the CTR (click through rate) and maximum income.

Proxy List - Glype.com

Very good news for the proxy industry and glype users in particular - glype.com has been sold to the Baron for an undisclosed sum. The Baron is a major player in the proxy world owning such iconic sites as proxy.org . This means there is now a path going forward for development and updates. Watch this space.

Free Proxy List - Youtube.com

Youtube.com is difficult with proxy - they often change their code so that means the say glype plugin needs to change each time. Also the whole video often has to be downloaded first before it starts (normally it starts straight away) and tends to be slow as has to go through the encryption process. Summary sometimes will not run at all but when it does - can be slow, so be patient. At the moment only about 5% of the most popular proxies have working youtube.com plugins.

In these note I have mentioned glype quite a bit as easy to use, install etc. Unfortunately it looks like the most recent purchaser has stopped developing it entirely. Its still the "best" but things like plugins for youtube.com have stopped coming out. What is a software long term path for development and updates? I dont see one at the moment but watch this space.

Proxy List - Spam.

To stop your proxy site or list being subject to spam, captcha can be used. Basically captcha is a method of testing that there is a real person at your site not a program trying to say mass submit sites to your proxy list. A simple test is used such as answering a question or rekey words shown in a field. Those words are usually distorted. In summary captcha is used to tell humans and machines apart thereby stopping your sites being spammed.

Proxy List - Sites And Your Rights.

Something to remember when you use proxy list sites, they are helping to ensure the US Bill of Rights and UN Human Rights declaration becomes a reality - specifically, Amendments 4 and 5 of The United States Bill Of Rights protect the right to be free of unwarranted and unwanted government intrusion into one's personal and private affairs, papers, and possessions. Article 12 of The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights states, "No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks." Something to think about.

Proxy List - Keep your Site Up-to-date and Working.

Something to bear in mind with Proxy or proxy list - things change. What I mean by that is outside factors are always changing such as the code that run your users favourite sites. Classic examples are Facebook and Youtube. When they change their code (which they do often), your users are often unable to use them via your proxy or proxy list. That means they will go elsewhere. Therefore you must diary to regularly check that the major sites are working i.e. youtube, facebook, myspace, google, twitter etc. It also pays to give your users some way of contacting you to tell you of the problems. Provide an email address (in non spamable format like privacy1000(.)com). How do you fix the problems as they arrise? Look into the forums like glype.com, fixes are often posted there or pay to get them fixed via say freelancer.com

Free Proxy List - ADDON Domains and their Uses.

It is possible to set up ADDON Domains via your cPanel. It means that you have the option of having an initial Account with all the standard site files, but then set up sites that look to the original account for those files - and will also share the same IP. Note that in the WHM you use the Modify Account option to set - Max Addon Domains:. ADDONS can be set up very quickly for your proxy or free proxy list sites. An example - site xxyyy.com is set up as an account. Site cccbbb.com can be set up as an ADDON on that account - both sites will share the same files and be identical in all but site name. A couple of downsides - a) is IP is blocked, main account and ADDONs are all blocked and b) you cant use Adsense on them as against Adsense TOS to have identical sites. Even with those downsides, a very useful option to have.

Proxy List - Passwords, How Important Are They?

The basics - if you use and keep a simple password, given time, someone will hack into your server, control panel, cPanel (or WHM) or FTP files. I personally left the Glype Control Panel for my proxy (but not) proxy list with the default password - some Iranian outfit hacked in and replaced my front page with goverment propaganda. Every day my server is attacked with BruteForce attacks. What that is is an attacker sends thousands of common passwords to your server to try to break in. By the way WHM has a cPHulk Brute Force Protection option - use it! So, passwords are VERY important. How can you generate good ones? Firstly your Root password - Change Root Password option - use the password generator. All others - also use that password generator or the one in Password Modification to generate passwords. It is also wise to change your passwords at least monthly. I realise this means you will no longer have the convenience of being able to remember your passwords - but its worth it!

Proxy List - Buy Proxies or Set Proxy Site or Proxy List up Myself?

There are several factors here - coding skill level, newness to proxies, type of proxy or proxy list. If you have some coding skills I would go with a new one UNLESS the proxy you buy a highly developed one i.e. protected from blocking at a highly sophisticated level and a high level of traffic which is self generating. The skill level needs to be good to keep up that protection level in a changing environment. If new to proxies and not skilled I would buy one just to start with. The only change you will have to make is to change your advertiser codes. Usually a seller will transfer the site to the server. With one site you can learn and experiment without the frustrations of setting up. Buying is about confidence so I would suggest buying via http://forums.digitalpoint.com What do you need to know 1) site statistics, number of visitors and country of origin (e.g. generally US traffic is more valued than say Chinese) 2) earnings - from where (e.g.) adsense 3) age of site (the older unless very sophisticated is more likely to be blocked) note you can check several of these in alexa.com 4) why are they selling 5) will they install 6) what resource does it use (i.e. will your server cope)7) how is the traffic generated. If you dont know the traffic might disappear as soon as you have bought it. 8)super important - has the seller got a good and high feedback score. 9) as a rule of thumb you should be paying 3 to 5 months of income.

Sometimes you will have problems with your proxy or proxy list whether at installation, upgrading or just something that has arrisen. First place to look would be with the source of your template - e.g. glype at the glype.com forum. Next would be to do a google for proxy forum - there are lots out there that are specifically for proxy and often on free proxy list or have large proxy related areas. One such would be http://forums.digitalpoint.com If help is not coming from there, you can getting help from a freelancer via say freelancer.com . Their freelancers are carefully rated and you can quickly see who are the skilful ones. Experts for hire can also be found on the forum mentioned.

Free Proxy List - Do Web Proxy Still Make Money

Proxies are a business. Like any business you must keep a careful track on your costs - advertising, server etc and your income. If expenses exceed income on your proxy or proxy list you must either reduce your expenses or increase your income. The former is usually easier to do - e.g. do more manual advertising instead of paid, look for a cheaper server - perhaps vps again for awhile until income comes up. The other options are just to keep the proxy or free proxy list for yourself and friends or give up! My experience is that you only start to make adequate money when you have ecomomies of scale - i.e. lots of traffic. With each incremental amount of traffic there is less and less expense associated against it - e.g. until it is full you only need one server - it costs the same whether its at 10% capacity or 90%. To anwser the direct question - yes they can - just treat them like a business, measure, experiment and learn.

Proxy List - Site Data Analysis

Once you start to get traffic it is very important to gain accurate information as to where your traffic is coming from, how it got there and how much what traffic is earning. Only with those details on your proxies will you be able to best target your advertising spend, your time and effort. For example you may find certain countries do not earn enough to cover your costs. Conversely some countries earn very well so that is where you need to spend your time and effort. I would recommend using Google Analytics. Its free, easy to set up and above all connects in with Google adsense i.e. it reports on earnings as well as traffic. You simply add a bit of code to your proxy site or proxy list (either the same on all or different code per proxy or proxy list site. The reporting ranges from high level of say total traffic, by country, source down to very low level. Highly recommended.

Proxy List - Bandwidth Issues

Dependent on your server package you will have anything from a very limited amount of bandwith available for your proxy to unlimited. There are several methods of controlling bandwith usage 1) stopping hotlinking 2) reducing the size of downloads and 3) restricting the countries that can access your sites. 1) hotlinking is where a user links say a .jpg via your site to multiple users of theirs - i.e. users your bandwith for no gain of yours. Hotlinking can be prevented via the cPanel or (assuming Glype) using the Prevent Hotlinking option in the Glype control panel. 2) downloads can be reduced in the Glype Control Panel in the Transfer Options area - File Size Limit. I have heard of this being set anything from 2mb to 20mb - I have it set be 10mb. 1) and 2) are wise to set no matter how much spare bandwidth you have. 3) The idea behind restricting certain countries is simply bang for bucks - if you have a limited amount of bandwidth you should be aiming at the traffic that gives you the greatest amount of return. You also dont want your site being restricted for going over your bandwidth limits for your proxy site and missing out on high paying traffic. If short of bandwidth you could well start by banning Iran and China. There are various sources of IP lists you can use, e.g. www.maxmind.com is the best and they have a free version. You can have sitting on your server, have the ip's listed in your .htaccess file or in your Glype Control Panel in the User Access Control - IP bans.

Proxy List - What Sort of Domain to use for Your Proxy Site or Proxy List .info or .com ?

The obvious difference between a .info and .com domain is cost - from the likes of godaddy.com .info is about $1 and .com about $10 US. Other differences - as .com has been around for a while there are fewer names available but conversely .coms are concidered more authorative i.e. more likely to be taken seriously. There is also some evidence that some countries block all .infos. For a proxy (although perhaps for a proxy list) my belief is that the name and its suffix are not important - the important this is - does the proxy work As an experiment I created several .com and .info and advertised them exactly the same and released them at the same time. After watching the results of these proxies for a week (the only way that matters - earnings per domain) I noticed no difference at all. So this persons recommendation, save your money and buy .info .

Proxy List - Learnings Number 6 - Your Own Proxy Site - Stopping Your Proxy Site or Proxy List Being Blocked

As soon as a proxy site exists there will be people trying to block it. It can be just at a school level, corporate level, or a whole country (such as Iran). Various methods are used by those that wish to block proxies such as subscribing to a proxy stop list, searching for key words such as Proxy or glype or looking at the actual software used. You will never completely stop your proxy being blocked but some suggestions 1) proxy name - make sure does not include the word proxy 2) search your software for the word proxy, remove where possible 3) ensure your blurb,template,script does not include the word proxy or even anonomous or phrases like private surfing (your visitors know what your site is about!) 4) check meta words and meta desciptions, they can be removed completely. 5) More subtly do not set up your proxy site long before you advertise them. Companies who offer anti proxy services routinely check new domains for their software - if proxy software, you are blocked before you start. 6) for the more expert of you, set up a site but dont add your software. Watch your access logs and block the IPs that come to it. I.e. come to a brand new completely blank site! You may like to check the IPs in say WHOIS first. There are more subtle methods, but these WILL help improve thr profitability and life of your proxy or proxy List.

Free Proxy List - Learnings Number 5 - Your Own Proxy Site - Gain Traffic - Paid traffic

There is only one really important rule with paid traffic for your proxy and that is you must earn more from it than you pay. That may seem obvious but unfortunately easily forgotten. So if you buy some proxy traffic via a mailblast, check the earnings after a maximum of three days - and compare that with what you spent. If it worked, do it again, but probably with a new domain. Why? Because as soon as you issue a new site it will start being blocked so you get the best value out of it in its first few days of life. You can also buy traffic based on your site being displayed for a specific length of time - usually available via a free proxy list. Usual period is a month. The more prominently your proxy is displayed the more traffic you get but the more you pay. The same rules apply, test and then decide whether worthwhile. I know of one proxy list site that is only for one day http://www.topbits.com . Conversely you only pay one dollar per advert. In that case the payback for your proxy ad would have to be within 2 days. You will see proxy traffic being advertised in Proxy Forums of which there are several. Another method of paid advertising is paid for links or banners on say a proxy list site. Ideally free proxy or proxy list traffic is always best but sometimes to generate real volume, economies of scale and users who come back, you have to buy proxy or proxy list traffic.

Proxy List - Learnings Number 4 - Your Own Proxy Site - Gain Traffic - Free traffic

Proxy sites are unusual as they do not want to gain their traffic via traditional SEO methods. Why not? Because the higher the profile of a site on Google, the higher the chance of that site getting blocked. The exception to this in the proxy world is free proxy list. These need to be found by traditional search THEN users go to actual proxy sites. So, there are two types of traffic, free and unpaid. Free first - search for the words proxy list. Free Proxy list literally list proxies, giving useful information like uptime, speed and activity. One such is proxyriver.com . You can list your proxy giving a link to your site. This way you get traffic, they get traffic and earnings for both. It can however be a frustrating business as many proxy list are hobby sites and not administrated often. One test is to checl Alexa.com to see if linking is even worthwhile (i.e. the proxy list has a decent amount of traffic.) Next are Forums. Once again do a google search and you will find Forums such as forums.digitalpoint.com where you can post your proxy for free. Other favourite sources are Yahoo and Google Groups, Facebook and Twitter. With yahoo and Google groups there are a number of groups that allow all proxy owners to add their proxy for free. One example is http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/free_proxys_list and no, its not mine.

Proxy List - Learnings Number 3 - Your Own Proxy Site - Monetize (Earn money)

Now you have a proxy server and proxy software for your proxy site. Now you need to decide what ad networks will work for you best on your proxy site or proxy list site. First there are some ad networks that will only allow their ads shown on the front page of your site. The logic of this is they can check the content of your front page and therefore know what content will show beside their ads. With the proxified page (the search page) they cant control or know the content as each search is different so they do not allow their ads to be shown there. OK, front page - the normal and recommended is Google Adsense as it pays on time everytime and has relatively high CPM (cents per thousands)although technically they pay based on clicks. They have several different format of ads including 728X90 banners, Search (where your users search and you get paid per ads clicked)and very skinny text ads. The banners can be image, text and image and just text. Generally image is considered more profitable. You MUST read the Adsense Terms of Service as they are very strict implemeting them. For your proxified page there are a range of choices in banner ads and pop unders. Many offer both such as Adbrite, Mediashakers and Xtend. Some like Adversal offer popunders only. Try them and see which works best for you. Be careful with too many popunders as they can put users off and reduce your return visitors. There are many others but these are a good start and are highly likely to pay you!

Proxy List - Learnings Number 2 - Your Own Proxy Site - Software

Next thing you will need to do to get your proxy site up and running is some proxy software. There are many types, e.g. Glype, Phproxy, Zelune, CGI Proxy. If you have a look at this proxy list you will see the majority are Glype. At time of writing 170,000 copies have been downloaded. I would suggest you start there especially if you cant modify code proficiently. Other advantages are there are many free templates (just use google), has a good discussions forum (help with installation etc) an excellent control panel, and an update path. Its very easy to globally add say adsense code (in just one place) and comes with standard Terms of use, privacy policy etc. 28th January 2010
Facebook.com - I have had quite a bit of feedback around problems using Facebook with proxy from this proxy list. I.e. users can get into Facebook but some of the features do not work. After some research can recommend using either the mobile version - address m.facebook.com - or the lite version of Facebook - lite.facebook.com -. Have had especially good feedback about the lite version.

Chinese traffic - similar to Iranian traffic for your proxy sites or proxy list but a) you tend to earn more on them via adsense b) you dont tend to get the huge spikes you get with Iranian traffic. China is potentially the biggest market for proxies and free proxy list given their huge population and relatively high internet population. Note recent problems with internet censorship and google. The method the chinese use are often called the "Great Firewall of China" So if you have the spare capacity, possibly worth a try.

From the site Admin - A word about Iranian Traffic. Many ban the traffic because it is low earning - that is true for the likes of mediashakers but you can earn reasonably well via adsense. There are several problems with it that I see - if there is say a political problem in Iran your traffic can go up very suddenly ten fold - can your server cope? Are you bandwidth capped? There is also the chance of getting your site hacked (as happened to me) putting you out of action. On balance, if you have a dedicated server with spare capacity uncapped bandwidth and strong passwords, why not try it. If you dont, you are likely to loose money and put the rest of your business at risk.

If you want to set up a proxy site, the first thing you will need is a server. Your proxy will sit on the server and your users will pick up the proxy from that server. There are two basic types 1) VPS (virtual private server) and 2) dedicated (only you are on the server). VPS is where most people tend to start as its cheap and server admin is pretty well non existent. When you gain experience and more sites/traffic the usual thing is to move to a dedicated server. The downside of a VPS is you are sharing with many other proxy owners - so if one gets really busy, your site gets really slow. Bevery careful with checking for - does this provider allow proxies (some do not) what bandwidth are you allowed and what sort of reputation do they enjoy. Check on the webmaster forums.
